The middle stream of the Yarlung Zangbo
River is under the threat of becoming deserts

In the early summer of 1953, a mud-rock flow occurred
suddenly in Guxiang ditch. The front of the mud-rock flow was
as high as dozens of meters. It looked like a giant black
dragon and it flew down with large amount of stone blocks,
mud, and trees.

Rocks with a diameter of 10 to 20 meters
floated on the top of the mud-rock flow. After it passed a
valley, it rushed out of the mountain pass and destroyed
everything within its range, including villages, forests and
temples outside of the pass; after it flew over the mountain
pass, the mud and stones covered the Sichuan-Tibet highway and
formed a piled fan with a width of 4 kilometers on the road.
The fan dammed the river course of Parlung Zangbo River and
formed a dammed lake. Thereafter, mud-rock flows happened
frequently and they made troubles to the Sichuan-Tibet highway
each year. Mud-rock flow makes it even difficult to travel
there.
