Unique Canyon Culture
The Great Canyon district was inhabited since ancient times. In 1958, some ancient human
skulls, stone tools and potteries were found in Nyingchi. In Medog, archeologists also
found some stone tools, bone tools and potteries. By the time of Tubo Kingdom, people in
the inland called this part (the canyon district) Yaoru. The troops of Yaoru were very
brave and were good at fighting; they fought to and fro with Tubo (Tibetan) troops.
Afterwards, people called this part Moiyu or Lhoyu etc.
For thousands of years, because the block of high mountains and deep
valleys, the people lived in the Great Canyon district were isolated from outside now and
then. However, the local Tibetans, people of Mamba and Lhoba communicated with each other
and they formed a unique cultural sphere in the Great Canyon region. Because of the
difficulty in transportation and the limitation of information from outside, the native
people of this district kept their traditional culture, which provided quite precious
information for the study on the history and religion of these nationalities.
