Large Indian Civet
(Viverra zibetha)


  Habitat: woods, bushes and grassland in hills and mountains.

  Feeding habits: catch small animals with paws and teeth.

  Food: mice, frogs, insects, birds, fruits, roots and stems of some vegetation.

  Size: with a body length of 60-80 cm and its tail is 40-50 cm long. Weight: 6-10 kg.

  Habits:  It's a kind of nocturnal animal and it likes to act alone. During daytime, it rests in its den and goes out to seek for food during the night. Sometimes, it also steals household fowls. The animal is born vigil and Southerners call it "fox cat". It has the habit to release its wastes in fixed places, thus it is commonly called "waste delivery wolf". Adult large Indian civets have secretion glands in its private parts and their secretion has foul smells. When they encounter enemies, they can produce such secretion in large amount to defend themselves. This secretion is usually called civetta, which is often used in perfume industry as perfume fixing agent to make the good smell of the wash last longer. In some places, people raise them to get their civetta.
