Tianyahaijiao and Luhuitou When mentioning Hainan Province, a lot of people will call to mind the famous scenic spots such as Wuzhi Mountain, Tianya Haijiao (which means End of the Earth and Corner of the Sea), and Luhuitou (which means the deer turns back its head). There are a lot of reasons why they become well-known, such as the praise of the songs, being printed on the stamps and postcards, and the vigorously growing tourist industry. In addition, there is also a very important reason that the natural landscape in Hainan is unique and beautiful. People living in the hinterland are experiencing a totally fresh feeling and surprise there, the tropical rain forest, the vast sea, and the second largest island in the country.
With the approval of the State Council, since August 18, 2001, Tongshi of Hainan Province is formally renamed as Wuzhi Mountain. Some autonomous counties and cities around Wuzhi Mountain are the major inhabited regions of Li people. Lying in the southeast of Hainan Island, Wuzhi Mountain is the watershed of Wanquan River, Lingshui River, and Canghua River. The mountains there are generally high and precipitous, 500 to 1200 meters above the sea level. The highest peak is 1867 meters high. In the southwest of Wuzhi Mountain, there is a wonderful tropical rain forest, which has been well preserved. The botanists from Mexico and Britain have sung high praise for it. More than 20 years ago, the tropical forestry's research institute of Chinese Academy of Forestry specially set up the ecological research laboratory on the Jianfeng range in order to better protect and utilize the natural treasure-house and make it benefit the local people.
A lot of literators and writers have made many fine pieces of writing to praise the beauty of Wuzhi Mountain. Qiu Rui, a poet of the Ming Dynasty once wrote a vivid poem to describe the mountain when he was only 13 years old. Tianyahaijiao lies on the seashore, 16 kilometers away from the western suburb of Sanya, where is the southernmost end of the Hainan Island. In the 11th year of Yongzheng Reign in the Qing Dynasty, Cheng Zhe, head of Yazhou, inscribed words, such as "the end of the earth,"" cape," "as boundless as the sky and the sea," and "Southern Heaven Pillar." Between the inscription of "the end of the earth" and "cape", there are a winding path to connect. When the tide rises, people can not come and go between the two places. The sea is melted into the sky, and when people look far away, their mind will be broad and level. There is no wonder that people living there all look pure and magnanimous.
The "Luhuitou" scenic spot lies 5 kilometers to the south of Sanya. In the beach covered with coral reeves, there is a lofty and towering mountain ridge, extending from the Northeast to the southwest and then turning over to the Northwest. It looks as if a golden deer is standing on the seashore to look around. There is a popular legend about it among Li people. Long long ago, there was an industrious and brave guy of the Li nationality living on the Wuzhi Mountain. One day, he held his bow and arrows to run after a golden deer, which had no place to escape any more when facing the sea. Suddenly, it turned its head and turned into a beautiful Li girl, smiling towards the guy. Later, they fell in love with each other and got married, settling down on the seashore. After the reform and opening-up, the lovely golden deer has been molded, and grasses and flowers have been planted around. A neat footpath has also been laid for the visitors.
