Abundant Salt Mines

The salt lakes in China are not only in large quantity, but also relatively centralized in distribution. Qaidam  Basin and North Tibet are the centralized distribution area of the Salt lakes, where hundreds of salt lakes gather and are reputed as the salt world. In the salt lakes, there stored over 100 kinds of saline minerals, including the common salt like alkali, saltpetre, rock salt, and gypsum as well as some rare salt like boron, lithium, bromine, strontium, barium, rubidium, cesium, thorium and uranium. Among them, the salt mine storage in the Cha'erhan salt lakes reached 426x108t, which is enough for people in the world to eat for 2000 years. In China, Xieci in Shanxi Province is earliest salt mine exploited in history. As early as Yu and Xia period, 21st century BC, the local people had already evaporated the saltwater for salt. The boron sand in Bangoin  Salt Lakes in Tibet was already exploited and utilized as far back as the 6th century, which was  1000 years earlier than in Europe.
