The Lowest Lake-Moonlight Aydingkol Lake
Aydingkol Lake is also named Jueluo Yuan. Its lake surface is 155 meters below sea level and it is the lowest lake in China. Aydingkol Lake in the Uygur language means moonlight lake, gaining the name for the lake water as bright and beautiful as moonlight. It lies in the most low-lying place in the basin of Turfan, 30 km to the southeast Turfan of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
The lake basin of Aydingkol Lake is covered by sand gravel, powder sand clay and chemical sediment from alluviation, aeolian and lake sedimentation in the Quaternary time . The lake occupies an area of 245km2 with a length of 43.5km, a maximum width of 10.2km,and an average width of 5.63km, . The lake region belongs to the temperate continental arid desert climate, with an annual precipitation of only 5mm. The days of precipitation in the whole year is 2.7 days, and the longest period without precipitation amounts to 425 days in succession. The annual evaporation is 2540 mm, the catchment area is 5.0x104 km2 and the coefficient of replenishment is 203.1. The lake water is mainly replenished by the groundwater. The rivers entering the lake include Alagou River and Xiangyang River to the west as well as other rivers seeping into the alluvium and diluvium in centripetal shape and flowing into the lake in the form of underground water. The mineralization degree is 336.47g/L and belongs to the sodium sulfate sub-type salt lake formed after rift faulting during the mid-Cenozoic. The saline deposit is mainly composed of halite, Glauber's salt and anhydrous Glauber's salt. Nearing the river mouth of the west lake, there is brine with an area of 5.0 km2, and a maximum depth of 0.5 m.
