Red Junglefowl
Gallus gallus

Habitat: mountain forests, bamboo woods, bushes and grass slopes.
Feeding habits: get food with its bill or peck after scratching with claws.
Food: seeds of vegetation, fruits, ants, white ants and locusts.
Size: the length of male bird is 70 cm and female bird, 40 cm. Weight: 600-1000 g.
Habits: a kind of resident bird. Red junglefowls often act in small groups. During mating seasons, the bird often utters sounds like the "ge, ge" cries of household cocks. But the short syllable in the end of its crying will stop suddenly. In order to contend for females, during the mating season, male red junglefowls often fight with one another. Wild junglefowls are good at running and are extremely vigil. In some mountain areas in Yunnan, red junglefowls often enter the household to join household raised fowls. They would chase the family cocks away then mate with hens. The young chickens thus produced are rather fierce and would run into forests when grow up a little. Red junglefowls are the ancestors of family fowls. All species of household fowls come from them. As early as 2000 years ago, our ancestors had tamed red junglefowls.
